About 4 years ago I did a full overhaul of my business – or so I thought. I changed my business name from I’ll Type for You to Tiluca Solutions, picked some pretty brand colours and had my first website built. At the time, that was what I could afford to do with the position that my business was in and the time of my life that I was in.
Over that time, things have changed and I have known for a little while now that I needed to do a revamp on my business. You know, update my images, update a few things on my website and that would be it – all done.
That was until my girlfriend called me in early March with a “funny story”. Her 5-year old daughter asked her, “what does Nat do for a job?”. My friend answered with “Nat runs a business – she is a Virtual Assistant”. Miss 5 sat on that for a minute and replied with “Is Nat Siri?” There were giggles all round – it was a very cute question.
Yet the more I thought about Miss 5’s question, the more uncomfortable I was with it. What exactly do I do? I know I’m definitely not Siri but what is a Virtual Assistant? I have been asked this many times before and my answer was never really clear. It was then I realised I needed to change. I needed to be very clear on what it is that I do and who it is that I help.
I was so surprised at how difficult this was. I really had no idea where to start. I think I was just too close to the situation. Throw in a pandemic for good measure and I was really struggling!
Given my career in the corporate business world, 7 years of running my own business and in the first quarter of 2020 being part of Emma McQueen’s Thriving Women program, I have a wonderful network of business owners and mentors. They specialise in so many different areas and all of whom I could ask for help. It’s interesting though, in the beginning, I didn’t actually know who to reach out to for what purpose.
I was given a book by Janine Garner called “It’s Who You Know”. This book allowed me to discover who played which role in my network. I realised who my butt-kick was, who my cheer-leader is and who was and still is my teacher. This was incredibly useful and I was able to reach out to these people with clarity.
And I can’t tell you how pleased I was that I did reach out. All of these amazing people generously gave their time, referred me to courses and provided services that I could utilise in my full-blown rebrand.
Thanks to these amazing people, I now have brilliant images, a beautiful new website and am clear on who I help and what I do. I am so amazed at all the work that I had to do to get this right for my business. It was almost a full-time job. So, what is that I do – I hear you ask?
